Downs Syndrome and How YOU Can Help

I would like to introduce you to Hadley.  She is the daughter of one of my co-workers who has Downs Syndrome.  Every year Hadley and her family along with friends and extended family help to raise money for Downs Syndrome.

I asked her mother before I shared with everyone because I know it can be a sensitive subject putting your personal business out to the public from someone else.  I wanted to help her and her family in any way possible to help raise awareness of Downs Syndrome.

Here is an excerpt from her sponsorship page:

Our sweet girl is raising money and awareness for Down syndrome. The Louisville office has helped us in many ways over the last 10 years and this is our way of giving back to a wonderful cause. We appreciate all the support from our family and friends over the last 10 years and we want to continue to build awareness so everyone will know how special this sweet girl is. Thank you for your donations and support for Down Syndrome of Louisville, Inc.. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
Sincerely!

The following information is from NDSS.org

One in every 691 babies in the the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common genetic condition. Approximately 400,000 Americans have Down syndrome and about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year.

Instead of the usual 46 chromosomes present in each cell, Lejeune observed 47 in the cells of individuals with Down syndrome. It was later determined that an extra partial or whole copy of chromosome 21 results in the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. In the year 2000, an international team of scientists successfully identified and catalogued each of the approximately 329 genes on chromosome 21. This accomplishment opened the door to great advances in Down syndrome research.

There is no definitive scientific research that indicates that Down syndrome is caused by environmental factors or the parents' activities before or during pregnancy.
The additional partial or full copy of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome can originate from either the father or the mother. Approximately 5% of the cases have been traced to the father.  All 3 types of Down syndrome are genetic conditions (relating to the genes), but only 1% of all cases of Down syndrome have a hereditary component (passed from parent to child through the genes).  Heridity is not a factor in trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) and mosaicism.  However, in one third of cases of Down syndrome resultuing from translocation there is a heriditary compontent - accounting for about 1% of all cases of Down syndrome.
Individuals with Down syndrome are becoming increasingly integrated into society and community organizations, such as school, health care systems, work forces, and social and recreational activities. Individuals with Down syndrome possess varying degrees of cognitive delays, from very mild to severe. Most people with Down syndrome have cognitive delays that are mild to moderate.
Due to advances in medical technology, individuals with Down syndrome are living longer than ever before. In 1910, children with Down syndrome were expected to survive to age nine. With the discovery of antibiotics, the average survival age increased to 19 or 20. Now, with recent advancements in clinical treatment, most particularly corrective heart surgeries, as many as 80% of adults with Down syndrome reach age 60, and many live even longer. More and more Americans are interacting with individuals with Down syndrome, increasing the need for widespread public education and acceptance.
I personally never knew anyone with Downs Syndrome and I make it a point to acknowledge people that I come in contact with that does have Downs Syndrome.  I can not image what or how they feel but I am sure that at times they may feel invisible.  I choose to be a recluse sometimes because I don't do very well in social situations but that is a choice I can make.  People with Downs Syndrome do not have that choice and it breaks my heart.

To know that people are quick to dismiss people whom are not like them physically and mentally just burns my nerves to no end.  People can be so cruel and mean at times but I want this post to remind people that we are all the same on the inside.   God made us all perfect in his image and his gift to us is life.  So I am sharing this with everyone in hopes that everyone will take a moment and help Hadley and her family raise the funds that they are trying to raise.

I ask that you please share this post with all of your friends, family, co-workers and all over your social media sites.  Help me help Hadley and others just like her.  You can click on her picture above and be directed to her site specifically and help them out.  They are trying to reach $5,000 by October 3 and so far they only have $845.00.  So won't you help me with this and let's help Hadley know she has made a difference by giving to this great cause.  Click here to help show your support.

God Bless you and keep sharing this with everyone.

Today I start being more Active!!!!!

Happy Sunday everyone!  I hope that your weekend has been great and relaxing so far.  Today I come to you to share my journey of getting in shape.  It will be a long journey because honestly, I should have started a long time ago.

I have always put everyone else's needs before my own and now I am paying for it.  You see I was always pretty active, or so I thought, and I never really paid much attention to things like carbs, calories, sodium and fat grams.  None of those things ever crossed my mind.  I only cared about how something tasted and if I liked how it tasted than I would eat it.

My favorite food is anything fried.  Fried hamburger, french fries, chicken, fish it really didn't matter as long as it was fried.  That of course is one of the reason's I have gained so much weight.  According to the Doctors charts I am considered morbidly obese.  I personally think those charts are full of shit but hey what do I know, right?  Well I know several things and they are:

A) I hurt all the time
B) I have gone up in size on my clothes
C) I avoid going places because I can't find clothes that fit
D) I am self conscious about what other's think of me
E) I am 5'6" and weigh 224lbs when I should weigh between 118-148lbs
F) It didn't happen over night and it won't come off over night
G) If I don't start than I won't ever accomplish any loss
H) Everyday is a new day to start again
I)  I will achieve my goal

See those are alot of things I know....lol.  I am also realistic about it.  I understand that it is going to be hard.  Nothing worth having is ever easy or at least that is what I tell myself.  I understand that only I am responsible for me and my actions no matter how easy it may be for me to make excuses in the end I have to live with the decision.

My SIL Kisha finally made the decision to get in shape by working on her treadmill and using her Fitbit Charge HR.  Well I have had a fitbit for a while and tried to use that as motivation but honestly, I did as little as possible.  They have all different ones depending on what you are looking to get out of it.  I had the Fitbit Flex but after hearing Kisha talk about her Charge HR I decided I would go get me one.  Maybe since I can see it on my results on my wrist instantly than I would be more inclined to do more.

She wants me to get a treadmill like her and start using it in the garage since I honestly don't have room in my house.  I just made a major purchase with this fitbit so I will have to put one on layaway but I will get one.  Right now I have a Stability Ball, Balance Disc, Malibu Pilates Chair Pro, Mats, Yoga stuff and the balance bar along with hand weights.

I even have the DVD's to go with my Malibu Pilates Chair that I will be using!!!!

So to say that I have a great start with equipment is an understatement.  To be completely honest, I have had the majority of this for years as in 5 years.  I bought it and told myself that today was the day I would change my life.  I honestly never did.  Here I sit at this computer screen confessing all of my failures in hope that I will be held accountable by all of you out there in bloggy land to do what I need to do.

I know that my SIL will certainly keep me accountable for we talk every day.  She keeps telling me that I just have to do it.  She sounds like a Nike commercial but she is so right.  It is hard though when no one else in the house is willing to help support me in getting there.

Yes my daughter and I have a membership to the YMCA but I have basically been giving them my money.  We haven't been in months and honestly we make no huge effort to go.  Sure it was great at first we would go 2-3 times a week but I would only do the treadmill and nothing else.  Occasionally I would swim for a bit but not long.  It is time for all of that to change.

I did start my journey in October of last year at my highest weight of 232 lbs and was down to 211 lbs come the end of April.  I obviously didn't stay with it.  I admit I got lazy, I didn't want to restrict my food intake any longer, I wanted a damn steak for crying out loud.  The diet program that the YMCA had me on was one that gave me a fat gram intake for the day.  For the most part it worked.  Only towards the end did it get clarified by the instructor that the amount of fat grams she told me was my minimum and not the maximum that I could have.  Apparently, she also forgot to tell the rest of the class as well because when she said that to me everyone else was in shock that they didn't know the amount they were told was also their minimum.

They all lost more than I did because they put the work into it as to where all I did was watch my intake number.  I didn't exercise at least not like I should have.  I am still going to do the fat intake but this time I am adding exercise in with it.  I know that I can do this.  I just have to make the time, commitment to myself and keep with it.

I will keep you all posted on my journey and I will get a before and after picture each week as well.  I know it won't be pretty and please don't judge me because I do that enough for everyone.  I now have my garage cleaned and all of my equipment out in the middle.  I am in the process of getting my DVD collection together as well so that I can do this in the privacy of my garage away from my family.

So until next check in on the progress I leave with this:

Wish me luck and be sure to leave some blog loving.  I would love to hear about your journey as well if you are on one to get fitter, healthier and happy.

KOHL'S and Vanity Fair Deal Buy 1 Get 1

Hello everyone.  I am coming to you with an Incredible deal from Kohl's and Vanity Fair.

At lunch today I decided I was going to Kohl's to get a new FITBIT but what I got was so much more.  I had a $10 off coupon along with a 15% off coupon so I figured I would get a great deal on the FITBIT.  Well they couldn't use the 15% off coupon for the FITBIT but they did take the $10 which was great.

So I have been in need of some bra's and thought what the hell I will take a look and see what they have.  Now first off I have only bought my bra's from JC Penney because I knew they had the style that I like.  I didn't realize that Kohl's carried the same brand.  But that wasn't the best part.

The best part about buying them from Kohl's is that Vanity Fair was buy 1 Get 1 free.  Savings!!!!!!!  I got 2 bra's for $40 which is amazing because that like never happens.  The lady at Kohl's told me that Vanity Fair would donate 1 bra to Dress for Success for Women.  Double bonus right there.  I got an amazing deal, helped someone else out and and and I got to write them a note on the empowering cards that they had there on the table.

My trip for a FITBIT turned out to be more rewarding than I had anticipated.  How amazing is it that Vanity Fair is donating a bra to women trying to get back into the professional work force?  I have to tell you that I have never heard of any company doing that before so I was super excited.

So I got back to work and immediately started telling everyone in my department about it and they all said they were in the market for new bra's anyway so what a great way to get something FREE and give back at the same time.

I would certainly appreciate it if you would spread the word to all the women that you know.  I am sure that both Kohl's and Dress for Success would be appreciative as well.  It is a WIN WIN for everyone all the way around.  You get a discount, 2 for the price of 1 and someone else gets one for FREE!!!!!

So spread the word and share the love, saving and support for a great cause.  Do you know of any other company that does that with their bra's?  I would love to hear your take and if you participated in this amazing offer.

Falling for Hodgepodge

Hello everyone and welcome back another edition of Wednesday Hodgepodge.  Joyce at From This Side of The Pond is amazing with coming up for the questions to get us all engaged.  So feel free to jump in and follow ago.  Meet some new bloggers, talk to some bloggers you already know and share the comment love.  We are all looking to meet new people and learn.

1. What have you 'fallen for' recently?
---- A false since of reconciliation.  Long story short.  I thought my up-line and I had gotten past our issue but apparently not.  Left me feeling betrayed and upset.

2. What's something you're 'squirreling away' for later?
---- A yard sale.  No it isn’t as bad as it sounds.  I just think that if we are putting all sorts of money out for my grandson who is growing like a weed than we should be able to recoup some monies spent on all his clothes.

3. How do you like your apples? Sweet? Tart? Crisp? Cooked? Apples are one of the superfoods for fall...how often do you eat an apple either plain or as part of a favorite recipe? What's your favorite variety?
---- I love sweet apples.  My favorite apple food would be Plain Ole Apple Pie.  I am not sure about the variety they use but whatever it is I like it…lol.

4. According to Fodor's the ten best fall foliage trips in the US of A are-Aspen Colorado, The Catskills New York, The Berkshires Massachusetts, Columbia River Gorge Oregon, Green Mountain Byway Vermont, Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway New Mexico, Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, Upper Peninsula Michigan, Lake of the Ozarks Missouri, and Glacier National Park Montana. Which would you most like to visit this fall and why?
---- Aspen Colorado would be my top pick regardless.  I love Colorado.  There is so much beauty and nature there.  Not to mention the air is more pure than what I am used to being in the Ohio Valley.

5. The topic of legalizing marijuana was raised in the most recent televised political debate so let's wade in too. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form. Four states have legalize marijuana for recreational use. Your thoughts?
----  I say make it all legal, tax it and cut down our debt for the nation.  Besides have you ever really seen a crazy pot head when they are stoned?  Seriously they usually just want to laugh, eat and relax.  Trust me when I say that if I could use it to ease the pain I have I would.  It is less addicting than other known narcotics and you don’t see people killing themselves on it.  At least I haven’t heard of any cases where they were so stoned they died from it.

6. Are you okay to watch a movie already in progress or do you need to always see it from the beginning? How about jumping into a TV series somewhere in the middle? Is that okay?
---- I can watch it no matter where it starts.  If the movie isn’t very good than I would prefer to start it at the very end…lol.  As for TV Series, let’s just say thank goodness for Netflix.

7. Thursday (September 24) is National Punctuation Day. What rule of punctuation trips you up most often? What rule of punctuation, when broken by someone else, bugs you the most?
----  I would have to say when to use the ; symbol.  I can’t remember what it is called never mind when to use it.  The other thing that bothers me is when to use a comma or not when making something plural.  Not much bugs me because I know I am just as guilty as the next on not punctuating correctly when I type, write or anything else.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
---- It has been pretty busy in our house lately.  I have taken my grandson to a couple of local places to enjoy the festivities.  I have been sick for the past 2 weeks going on 3, several doctor appointments and a sleep study.  I am glad to have the doctor appointments past me along with the sleep study.

We had our driveway widened, the deck repaired and pressure washed and next up with the house is to get the front door painted.  I have the paint but haven’t started on the door yet.

Thank you for stopping by and be sure to check out some of my other blogs that I have done lately on travels, adventures, cooking and a variety of other things.

I would love to have new followers and meet new people that I haven’t had a chance to follow yet.  So please share the love and follow me on my crazy adventures and life lessons.

Homemade Low Fat Chicken Chili

Today I want to share with you one of the most incredible meals that I have made recently.  I have been searching for food that is filling, healthy, low in fat and isn't expensive to make.  I did all of that in this one recipe.  Yes affordable, filling, healthy, low fat and loved by all in the house!!!!!!  Even my grandson.

I found the recipe on this one here.  It is so simple to make that I can't believe I didn't find it before.  I had bought this food processor back in March and have been dying to use it.  My daughter told me that part of the recipe called for me to either use a blender or the processor to mix the beans into a paste.  I don't know about you but I don't really like to use the blender.  It just seems like you can't get everything out of it because it sticks to the bottom.

So we mixed like it said, poured it back in and finished the cook time.  OMG!!!!!!!  This was probably one of the most delicious chili's I have ever made.  I will caution you though that the recipe should be doubled.  There are 4 1/2 of us in my family when you count the grandbaby and there was enough for all of us to have 1 serving.  There were no leftovers which I wasn't particularly happy about.  I wanted more but also wanted some for lunch the next day.

With fall here now it is always a great way to eat a healthy hearty meal and still stay healthy.  We all know that fall is the perfect weather for Chili so why not give this one a try.  I can promise that you won't be disappointed.

Have you tried this chili before?  Did you find it a tasty alternative to regular chili?  Are you one of those people that don't believe it is Chili unless it has noodles in it?  I personally prefer noodles in my chili but this one is perfect without it.

Please share what your perfect go to meal is for the fall?  I would love to hear your opinions and who knows you may even help me discover something new and different I hadn't thought of for dinner yet.

Family Fun at a Petting Zoo

Hello everyone and welcome back to another blog staring my adorable grandson.  His mommy usually has to work open to close on Sundays at her job and that leaves us with the baby all day.  So instead of sitting in on a beautiful day we decided to take him out to explore up close and personal with some animals.

Hubby and I decided to take little man to the Henry's Ark in Prospect which is a free petting zoo.  I took my kids when they were little and thought it would be something nice for the baby to do.  I was a little disappointed that we couldn't feed the animals though.  That is one of the main reasons I wanted to take him.  So he could experience how fun it is to feed other animals.  However, first we had to feed my little animal.  He was having a blast at DQ with the french fries and sitting in a booster seat next to his pawpaw.

After we got our bellies full we headed down the road about 2 miles.  We turned on a really nice road and drove for just a short distance.  The entrance was hard to see and we almost passed it up.  If it wasn't for my hubby paying attention I would have missed it.  So we turned in and parked.  Time for the excitement to begin.

Getting to experience this with my grandson was so different then when I did it with my kids.  For one thing, we couldn't feed the animals, there wasn't as many and the one's we did see weren't in the best of shape except for the birds and goats.  It was sad to see this but they are a non-profit and operate strictly on donations.

Seeing Christian look at those goats was funny.  He wasn't sure what to make of them.  He wanted to pet them but at the same time wasn't sure about them.  He was not about to let go of his pawpaw.  I mean why should he, he is taller and could carry him longer than I could.  Not to mention this was the first time there for the both of them.  I couldn't believe my husband had never been there before since he was born and breed in Louisville.  I suppose since he didn't have any kids of his own he really had no reason to go there before now.

First up of course was his duck ducks as he calls them.  We seen a couple of peacocks, a turkey, a bunch of chickens and several geese, swans and ducks.  He loved the ducks.  He has a bunch of toy ducks at home.

Even though we couldn't feed the animals the goats were extremely friendly.  They just came right up to us and stood there waiting for the attention and affection they wanted.  Christian was happy to accommodate them that is for sure.  He was amazed at the goats and how close they got to him.  That is until his pawpaw petted them and showed him it was ok.  As we were getting toward the end the owners came out and right behind them were their doggies.  Of course we couldn't pass them up.  Even though I am allergic to cats and dogs I still couldn't help but to show this old dog some loves along with Christian and his pawpaw.

Christian was getting tired so pawpaw picked him up again and was carrying him when we came to the last area of goats.  Christian tried to climb over the gate and get in there.  I couldn't help but take this photo of him.  I think it captured the fun the best.  On the way back out we noticed a bunny that had be hiding so I included him on the photos for memory sake.  Christian didn't notice him but I sure did.

We stopped at the little gazebo on the way back to take a short brake and Christian noticed water and was trying to peak through the gate to see what was out there.  As we sat down for a second an EMU came up behind him and was checking us out.  Christian thought that was funny.

As we were leaving pawpaw was carrying him on his shoulders and than he decided he wanted to walk.  How precious is this last photo of the baby following in his pawpaws steps to the car?  We had such an amazing time there.  I just hope that one day they will let us feed the animals again.  I know he would have loved that.

So what fun things did you do this Sunday with your family?  Have you ever been to a petting zoo like this?  I would love to hear about other petting zoo's.  Who knows maybe one day I can get out to see it with the baby.  He loves to travel and explore new things.

Black or White Movie Review

Hello everyone and Happy Monday to you!!!!!  I know some people don't like Monday's and I am sorry but hope you still have a wonderful day.

So over the weekend hubby and I were surfing Netflix for something to watch that wasn't a norm for us.  Yes we are couch potato's a lot!!!!!  He was in the other room at the moment and I was surfing what was out there when I came across this movie.  Now I have seen the previews on the t.v. and I never really put much thought into it before so when I seen it I thought what the hell.  Let's give this movie a try.  You see our previous selections for the past year haven't been the best choices.  They may have seemed like they would have been good but in reality to us they just plain sucked.

This is a movie about a bi-racial girl who is caught in the midst of a tug of war between 2 grandparents.  She has grown up with the white grandparents her entire life because her father never had anything to do with her when her mother died in child birth.  When the white grandmother dies it leaves only the grandfather who is a lawyer left to raise the child whom he admits doesn't know what he is doing because his wife always handled everything related to her.  He gives it his best all the while drowning himself in the bottle.

He had lost his daughter and was left to raise his grandchild with his wife.  Then in a car accident he looses his wife and is left alone, confused, angry, depressed and still has to keep up appearances of keeping it all together without being able to properly grieve.  Then you add the fact that now all of a sudden the other grandparent wants to take the child away is enough to send anyone into a downward spiral.  However, he does step upto the plate and gets a tutor for her and sits right there and learns everything she is learning so he can be a better grandfather, role model and all around supporter.

His wife and the other grandmother had a relationship and he never had a problem with that or them sharing the little girl.  However, since the wife died the other grandmother steps up and starts causing issues with him and the little girl.  She turns to her nephew whom is a high powered attorney and tries to take custody.  Of course they play the race card and gets a black judge assigned to the case which they think will surely turn custody in their favor.

I have to say as I was sitting there watching this it was like my life was replaying in front of me.  The only difference is that these people had the money to drag it out and fight for eternity over this little girl.  Of course the fact that one was a lawyer and the other a successful business owner with lawyers in the family.  I on the other hand did not.  Yes I would have fought for eternity if I could have but honestly, I was my only income and I had other children to raise and I didn't have an attorney in my family.

The father shows up whom is a drug addict and a manipulator and extorts money out of the white grandfather whom only gives him the money because he promised he was clean and only needed to pay off some debts.  The condition on the money was that the father would show up and meet his little girl and get to know her.  They turn it against him in court.  Then the father comes back and demands more money and when he doesn't get it he tries to stab the grandfather.  He then takes off into the house and realizes what he has done.  He goes to apologize and finds the grandfather drowned in the pool.

After been given CPR he comes back and realizes that this was what he needed to pull the judge in his favor.  As court approaches the next day the judge is made aware that they father and grandfather both have something to say about the case before the judge makes a ruling on custody.

The judge allows the father to go first and he admits that he is not ready to be a father, he has issues, he is an addict and he doesn't deserve to be the little girls father.  He tells her that he doesn't want custody and that the grandfather is who should be granted full custody.  When the judge turns to the grandfather who was going to tell about the incident the night before, he suddenly changes his mind after hearing the father admit that he doesn't want the little girl.

In chimes the attorney for the other grandmother claiming that they revert to the original case of her getting custody.  She stands up and refuses to put the case back to her getting custody.  She admits that even though the child is bi-racial she is more than satisfied with how the white grandfather is and has been raising her.  After all she has had the best of the world and as long as she gets to have visits she will be ok.  She said she trust him but he does need to get help with his drinking.

Can I just say that this case made me cry.  OMG I was on an emotional roller coaster with this movie.  I have dealt with alot of what this movie has in it.  Loss of a child, loss of grandchild, neglect from the father, depression, anger, fighting in court, bi-racial issues and so much more.  I had to fight in court for my grandchildren only to be under minded by the grandfather.   I have not gotten to see them in almost 7 years now.  I have and still suffer from depression from the loss of my daughter.

I have a bi-racial grandchild whom has had little to nothing to do with his father other than facetime or snap chat or whatever you call it.  Why you ask?  Well simple he lives in Texas and she lives here with me.  His mother according to him is notorious for taking her grandchildren away from their mothers.  I am not about to let that happen!!!!  He doesn't pay child support and yet demands rights to his son.  He doesn't bother sending him anything for his birthday but yet demands rights.  I wasn't happy to find out that my daughter was pregnant but I am forever changed because of this bi-racial child.  He is my world and I totally understand why they both fight over the granddaughter in the movie.  They both love her and want the best for her.  Even though they come from totally different up bringing, backgrounds and cultural difference in the end all that matters is the child.

To sum up this movie is pretty simple in my opinion.  NO matter the differences, custody situation, political views, background or cultural differences....the only thing that matters..... THE CHILD'S BEST INTEREST, LOVE FROM ALL THE FAMILY AND SENSE OF BELONGING!!!!!!    When a child loses a parent they should not be subjected to losing other family members because the one that has the child physically wants to be selfish and keep the child from the rest of their family.

I pray and hope that one day this will get through the head of the father of my grandchildren, the other grandparents and all those involved.  They may be accomplishing their goal of hurting me for whatever their minds want to hate me for but in the end......they are hurting my grandchildren more.

Have you seen this movie?  What are your thoughts?  Can you relate or know someone who can relate?  What is the latest movie you watched this weekend?  I would love to hear your thoughts on this movie or situation that you may be going through.  Who knows maybe my experience and your experience can make sense and help one another.

♥♥♥Happy 21st Birthday to my son ♥♥♥

Good morning and Happy Friday everyone!!!!!!  Today I want to wish my son a very Happy and Special Birthday wish.  Today he is officially 21 and is legal to do any and everything he wants.

My daughter planned on taking him out for his birthday and doing a right to passage evening but she is sick so she won't be taking him out tonight.  When I asked what he wanted for this special day I got two choices.  A) Computer parts or B) Trip to the gun range.  What strange request but ok.  He proceeded to tell me that the trip to the gun range would be cheaper.  However, he doesn't own a gun so I don't know why he wants to go there but whatever.

After checking into the gun range thing I realized that he is correct.  It is way cheaper than buying him a computer part.  Especially considering he custom made his computer literally and now has to do upgrades to it and hasn't had it for a year yet.  Computers are so sensitive but he is using it mostly for gaming so what do I know.  Apparently not much that is for sure when it comes to gaming computers.

He did take today and the next 2 days off just in case he decided to do what most people do when they turn 21 and that is go to the bars and get hammered.  Of course if this is what he decides to do than I will be right there with him as his DD and making sure he doesn't get into any trouble.  Yes people I will be the one going out with my son to ensure he has a great time!!!!!!  It has been years since I have been to a bar but I am the cool mom who my kids actually like going out with.

So today again, I wish my son the most Happy, Wonderful, Amazing, Blessed Birthday that anyone could have.  I Love You Son and only want the best and the world for you. ♥♥♥♥

Reflections on life

Good evening everyone.  I wanted to take a moment and reflect on what life has given me, taken from me, thrown at me and what I have survived.

Tomorrow is my babies 21st birthday and it got me to thinking about all the things that I have been through in these past 21 years.  Man how time flies by in a blink of an eye.  It doesn't seem that long ago and yet I feel 1000 yrs older than I did back then.

But in those 21 years he has been through alot and with me right there along with him.  His father and I divorced but he still kept visiting with him, his grandmother and uncle until his dad got married again.  Since then he hasn't really seen his dad.  Although, he did move in with him for about a year because my mother got diagnosed with cancer and taking care of her was a full-time job and really took it's toll on my son.  He started getting into fights at school and just had a really hard time dealing with it.  You see he was extremely close to my mom.  Afterall he was the baby of the family, mom's running buddy and the only boy in the house.  He really adored and admired her along with his sisters.  I have to say I raised a pretty good kid.

Then his nana a.k.a. my mom, passed away and he handled it as any kid would and pretty much kept it all in.  He didn't like to show his emotions to much because he thought he had to be the man of the house for me.  Bless his heart he tried so hard.  Then less than six months later his big sister who he was closest to got killed in a motorcycle accident.  I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak.

But he kept his head up.  He joined ROTC at school, became a junior member of the police force for teens.  He started to date Emilee and even took her to his Senior Prom which I was a little worried about him not wanting to go.  But he went and I have to say he was absolutely handsome and the dress that she wore was beautiful.  Sadly thought they didn't stay together very long since she was only a Junior.

Yes she is that white and it isn't a bad lighting or correcting job in photoshop.  She was still beautiful and they made an adorable couple.

He moved to my brother's house for a little bit after he turned 18 because he had a choice of either getting a job or going to college and he didn't want to do either.  Since he didn't have a male role model in his life, I called my brother and asked him to help.  He told me to send him on down to his house and he would get him a job and teach him how to work and make money.  He did just that and even helped him get a car.  He still has that car to this day.  It has cost me a fortune in repairs but that is to be expected for an older car.

After several months he moved back home, got a job at Chucke E Cheese and has been working every since.  Today he is an assistant manager at Great Cookie Company in one of the major malls in town.  He stays in his room mostly after work and plays on his computer.  So I don't have to worry about him getting in trouble when he isn't home because he is working and when he isn't he is home so no worries.

The only thing that I wish is that his Nana and sister were here to help him celebrate his 21st birthday.  I know he misses them everyday and his niece and nephew as well.  We will all one day get to see them again when the time is right.  Until that day comes he is honoring his nana and sister with this amazingly beautiful tattoo that takes up the majority of his back.

Life hasn't always been hard for him though.  There were a lot of great moments for sure.  We have traveled a bit to St. Louis, Texas, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.  Not to mention all the other places he has been with his grandmother on his father's side.  He graduated from High School, experienced a job in sales which he didn't really do well with.  It was a commissioned base job and they gave him the worst area of town that was door to door.

He has done so much that it is hard to write it all in one post.  If I did you would be here for a long time....lol.  I can honestly say that he has grown into a very wonderful young man even though he has been dealt a lot of heartache and blows in his 21 years.  He is a stronger person than most people his age and really values family and life.  He has loved and lost, failed and conquered, been happy, sad and depressed but through it all he has been a rock, an amazing son and a dependable person.

Yes I still get attitude sometimes but hey what do you expect.  He is only 20 3/4 at the moment.  Hell who am I kidding I still have attitude and I am in my 40's.

Homemade Low Fat Chicken Broccoli Alfredo

Good Thursday Afternoon to everyone.  I hope you have had a wonderful week so far.  It is almost over and the weekend will be here again.  I don't know about you but this week has seemed to flown by.

So as some of you know, I have been trying to lose weight.  Yes I know it won't happen over night but I keep falling off of the wagon so to speak.  I am back up 15 lbs from May.  Anyway, with that being said, I need to find a way to make stuff that taste good, fools my stomach and is low in fat.  Yeah I know it sounds impossible but it isn't.

I have been craving Chicken Alfredo but the Alfredo sauce is high in fat so I knew I had to find an alternative for it.  I came across THIS recipe for the sauce and thought what the hell.  It says it is only 6 gms of fat but I am sure it is a bit more depending on the type of cheese you use.  It is extremely simple to make and I had everything already except for the skim milk.  My family is a whole milk family.  Except for me, of course the only time I drink milk is with the Chips Ahoy cookies or the Nestle Quick.  Those are my treats and very rare that I have them.

So the recipe says to double it if you are adding meat to it which I did.  I even bought a bag of frozen broccoli cutlets that was on sale 10 for $10 at Kroger and added that as well.  It was so super simple to make.  I cooked the chicken, or should I say I steamed it, then I added the broccoli and let that cook in with it.  Next was time to start the sauce.  I followed the directions to a T only difference is that it lets you decide how thick you want the sauce by how long you cook the base.  I think I cooked mine a little to long because it was a little too thick.  I cooked up some fettuccine noodles and threw some garlic bread in the oven.

Everything was absolutely amazing.  I have to honestly say that the sauce was better than anything that I have ever bought in the store.  I honestly could have just sat there with a spoon and ate the sauce alone.  No one else would have been happy in my house but I sure would have.

So have you tried reduced fat homemade Alfredo sauce before?  Did you find it easy or difficult to make?  Do you enjoy making things from scratch like that, or almost scratch should I say?

I would love to hear your thoughts on low fat meals and what your family thinks about them.  I am super excited to try new things with food and who knows I might pick yours.

Good morning and Happy Sunday!!!!!

Good morning everyone.  I hope that your weekend has been great so far.  It is hard to believe that it is already Sunday.  What is even harder to believe is that I was up before 7 a.m. this morning.  Anyone who knows me knows that I don't ever get up this early on a Sunday.  But since I am I thought I would share what happened yesterday in our house or lack thereof.

Yesterday I went to my routine chiropractic appointment which made me feel alot better.  I have missed a couple of visit from being out of town and the holiday.  I was able to get in yesterday morning and afterwards we went to lunch at BoomBooz Pizza.  If you have never been to a chiropractor I highly suggest it.  Your body will thank you for it, trust me.

After lunch hubby and I came home and we just relaxed for a bit before heading out to my BIL house for a bonfire with my grandson.  I wasn't sure how he would handle it but he did amazing.  Well other than the fact that he kept wanting to touch the fire.  He is only 14 months old so everything is a new experience for him.  Of course hubby and I kept a close eye on him and wouldn't get him get to close.  The bonfire was in preparation of the Pig Roast that we are doing tonight at my BIL's house.  Here are just a few pictures of him and the rest of the family hanging out and enjoying the amazing fall air and beautiful night.

First he had to test out all the rides that was around.  The seat hammock was a bit tricky for him and didn't keep his attention for long.  Pawpaw helped him down the big slide before he got on the tricycle bike and ride to the other swingset.

Then it was off to explore something new and exciting.  Although I don't think he knew what was going on at this point.  He had another kid to play with and after all she was giving him a gift....lol.  Paisley May isn't afraid of anything and especially this toad.

I was surprised that he didn't put it in his mouth.  I mean after all babies his age usually put everything in the mouth first.  It seems like a way of deciding if they want it or not.  Fortunately he didn't and I honestly don't think he realized it was a real live breathing creature.

The fireshow was next and boy did Christian love this part.  He kept wanting to run to the fire and see what it was since he had never seen it before.  Between Pawpaw and I we had our hands full that is for sure.

Finally we had to distract him with something else.  So we showed him the chickens, played with the head lamp and finally got to go for a tractor ride with Aunt Gayle.

I don't know which part he enjoyed more to be honest.  He had such a blast with all of it and I loved watching him explore new things around him.  We live in the city and my BIL and his wife Gayle live sorta in the country.  Well they have acreage so to me that is country...lol.

Hubby and I figured he would have fallen asleep before we got on the expressway to come home but he surprised us.  He actually stayed away for 3/4 of the ride home.  We are going to be doing alot of the same things again today only today there will be about 70 people there and alot more kids to play with this time.

So tell me what fun did you have so far this weekend?  Did you get to explore something new and exciting?  Spend time with family and friends or just take a relaxing day?  I would love to hear what you have done so far this weekend.

So until tomorrow I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday and enjoy this amazing day that GOD has given to us.

Florida, Vacation, AVON and being sick

Hello everyone and welcome back to my little corner of the Blog world.  I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend.  Mine was really uneventful but wanted to take a moment and catch everyone up.  If you read my travels-weather-and-excitement post than you know that I recently went on vacation to the sunshine state of Florida.

Well, she wasn't so sunshine to me.  I flew in right as the Tropical Storm was suppose to hit and man did it make it miserable on us.  But nevertheless, we are the AVON Ladies and a few Good Men and we still managed to keep ourselves entertained with great friends, stories and so much more to talk about.  The whole purpose of me going to conference in Orlando this year was to meet the one and only Molly Stone Bibb with AVON.  I follow her on facebook, twitter and youtube.  She is a real down to earth person who gets the struggles of life and still manages to keep us all on our toes and calls us to the carpet when we want to whine about something not going right.

I was more determined than ever to meet her at this conference.  I was actually scared to approach her because she is such a big deal in the AVON Business.  She is absolutely phenomenal and one of the nicest person you can ever meet.  So I got to meet her and the rest of the conference really didn't compare.  I was super excited to meet one of the greatest mentors I have ever come across.

So on to the rest of the vacation.  When I arrived it was nice weather and so relaxing to be in Florida.  Even though I missed my family already it was a nice break from the everyday routine.  That night it started to pour down rain.  It really was a nice lightening show from my window.  However, I was not quick enough to capture it on the camera.

I meet up with my District Manager who I shared the room with for the first night and we went to dinner.  We both wanted steaks and was determined to find one.  We went to the restaurant A Land Remembered which was hidden from the rest of the hotel.  The setting was beautiful and the food was amazing.  However, it was expensive.  The Ribeye alone was $50 and than everything else was ala carte.  So we did what any reasonable person would do and ordered 1 Ribeye, 1 order of asparagus and an order of mashed potatoes and split everything in half.  Even splitting it in half it still cost us $52 a piece.  Check out the little alligator shape butter.  It was such a nice dinner.  The staff was amazing.  I would have eaten there every night if I could have afforded it.

Unfortunately it rained the majority of the time I was there and with all the classes I took I wouldn't have really been able to get out and see much.  I did a lot of walking and curled up to my tablet and read My Favorite Husband which is Free on Kindle.  Loved that book.  I stayed up way past 2 a.m. reading it.  If you haven't read it, I suggest you click on the link above and get it.  Loved this book.

I have to confess that the hotel was a huge disappointment for me though.  I was really surprised that it didn't meet my expectations.  First let me say that the people in the shops in the hotel were more friendly than anyone at the hotel except for the Event Coordinators.  The maid "for a lack of better word, because she was not for sure" didn't speak when spoken to which burned me up.  I mean seriously how hard it is to say hello and good morning when someone says it to you?  Apparently for her it was extremely difficult.  Second, she took the garbage out of the garbage can and left it laying across my sink, third, she didn't even bother cleaning the glasses or putting them in the spot to make them appear to have been cleaned.  But wait for it, that isn't the worst part of it.  The next morning when I took a shower, I pulled a long blonde hair off of me from the towel I used.  No big deal you say, I am being to picky you say, well my hair is BROWN!!!!!!  So no I don't think I was being picky.

Before you ask, no I didn't call management because we have all seen the horror stories on CNN, MSNBC and the Today Show.  Here is a video showing what I mean.
It really is disturbing.  But I still didn't complain because I wanted to keep my stuff and had I complained I was just asking for them to go through my things and take something.

Then Tuesday comes around and it is time for me to go home.  The sky was beautiful and so peaceful.

Off to the airport I was heading for the long journey home.  I had a 3 1/2 hr layover in Atlanta which was no fun.  My throat was hurting, I was tired and just ready to be back home.

Wednesday morning rolls around and I call my doctor because at this point I could hardly talk and it hurt to swallow.
I was told that I didn't have strep throat which was a relief but they didn't know what was wrong with me.  I was the 7th person she had seen in 3 days with the same symptoms.  So amoxicillin, ibuprofen and lots and lots of ice cold water for me.  I am happy to report that I am feeling alot better, I have my voice back and even went to work today.

So that was my vacation in a nutshell.  It was pretty boring and I know next time that I go to a conference to rent a car.  I don't ever want to be stuck at another location again.  However, next year it is going to be in Las Vegas which is going to be pretty damn awesome.  I am renting a car for that one because I want to go site seeing on this trip.

Do tell me, what did you do this past week?  Anything fun and exciting?  Any tips from those that have been to or live near Las Vegas?  I would love to hear your stories, ideas and suggestions.  Did you read the book that I mentioned?  If not than I highly suggest you get it and sit down and read it.  OMG it is an amazing book that takes alot of twist and turns and comedy to a whole new level.
