New Driver, Used Car and $500 in Do it Yourself Repairs Later ---Lesson Learned

Hello everyone, today I am bringing you a true story about my 24 yr old daughter that took her used car to Ken Towery to get a check up on her car.  The picture above pretty much depicts the sight of me when she brought me her list of things they said was wrong with it.

Now she went in for a simple Oil change and coolant flush.  Oil change was for good measure and the coolant flush was because her heater isn't working in her car only 2 weeks after getting it.  So lets start with the basics first and work from there was my thought.  So while Ken Towery had the car I told her to have them do a once over on it and see what else was going on.  (yes bad idea I know).  So after the oil change they came back with a list that was over $1200.  They listed the following needed to be replaced:

Rotors on the back (even I know those are on the front of a car)
Heater Coil  (cheap part but like 6 hrs to do because you have to take out the dash)
Back Brakes
Wheel Cylinder
Coolant Reservoir

With a grand total of like I said almost $1200 with the most expensive being the Heater Coil.  Now mind you all of these parts are not that expensive but it is the labor.  However, I like to have fell over when they told me that the Coolant Reservoir was going to be $150 plus labor to replace it.  Without even thinking I blurted out "your out of your damn mind, I know they are under $60 at every auto store around".

Needless to say I told her to pay for the Coolant flush and oil change and go straight to AutoZone and tell them that she needed all the parts on the list.  Then call her dad and ask him if he has a garage and if we can come over and have him change the brakes.  The heater coil can be done later but we got it anyway.

So long story short, she got all of these items for under $250 and we went on our merry little way.  Then comes Saturday.  We head to her dads house to do the brakes and he proceeds to show her how to do them after he got them started.  My husband and I didn't see any reason for us to stick around so we went back home.  Everything seemed fine when she got home that night.  WRONG!!!!!!!

Sunday rolls around and she is so sick with food poisoning and the stomach bug that she is hospitalized for 2 days.  She gets out on Monday and calls and tells me on her way home that it feels like she has no brakes and the car isn't wanting to stop.  I immediately told her to take her foot off the brake, throw on her blinkers and just coast.  So she did but kept coming home anyway, she was about 3 blocks, it was late, dark and hardly any traffic at all.

When she got home I went out and checked her brakes because she said that this light was on.  I drove it after checking the fluid level which was dangerously low.  I came back and told her I had good news and bad news.  Good news is the light went out because I added fluid, bad news, the brakes are screwed.  So next morning we drove up to Ken Towery again and dropped off the car and had them check it.  I told her that I was going to be driving in front of her with my cart so that way if she hit anyone it was going to be me instead of someone else.  I was hoping they only needed to be bleed but NO!!!!!!!!  Damn my luck.

The guy called and said that my ex-husband put the brakes on wrong and that he blew both Master Cylinders that we just bought, he could clean the brakes and drums but had to replace the cylinders.  So I gave him permission to change them at the tune of $298.98.

So the lesson here, DON'T LET SOMEONE UNTRAINED TO DO AUTO REPAIR!!!!!!  I was scared to death that she was going to get hurt but I am glad that she wasn't.  Now her brakes are fixed and good as new.

So now we have brakes that work, safe daughter, safe grand baby and a mamma that is feeling alot better.  Now to get the Heater Coil put in and it will be all good.  Oh yeah and the Coolant Reservoir which is only 3 screws and a hose.  Even she can do that one.

So just remember that if you are trying to save money the best thing to do is to shop around to different places and get estimates because doing it yourself isn't always the cheapest.  I learned that the hard way.  However, I didn't realize that you could actually put brakes on backwards, especially when you have the Manual showing you how to do it.  But I guess you can because he did.  Lesson learned.

Today is a day that we celebrate my big brother Kevin.  My brother Kevin a.k.a. My Honey Dear turns another year older.  Even though we don't get a chance to spend alot of time together I still wanted to send him a message and tell him that I Love Him and Miss Him everyday.

As we get older we have responsibilities that sometimes keeps us from being close as we once was.  But I wanted him to know that I was thinking of him this day and everyday and no matter what I Love Him.

He has taught me alot in my life on what to do in certain situations, what not to do in other situations and how to handle myself in every situation.  He taught me how to fight and even how to handle my temper at times and for that I am grateful.

So big brother I want you to spend your day celebrating this wonderful day in history that our mom brought you into this world and know that you are loved by many and looked up to.  We are going to have to get together more often when we aren't tired and wore out from working.

I pray that your day is and will continue to be filled with alot of Love, Laughter and Many Many Blessings.  Here is to you my brother may it be all you wanted and more.

Love always,
your sissy

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of Wednesday Hodgepodge.  I am linking up again this week with Joyce over at From This Side of the Pond.  So feel free to join in.  We all love to meet new people and see how many friends we can make.  Joyce has been doing this for some time now and reading all the different blogs that participates is great.  Not to mention it is a great way to make friends but also to find new people to follow and to follow you as well.  So be sure to leave some blog lovin’ when you're done reading and be sure to visit and follow as many people as you can.  We are all looking to grow our audiences.

1. When did you last have to interact, either by phone or in person, with someone in a government run agency? On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the experience? (10 being fabulous and 1 being pass the Tylenol)

---- It unfortunately the IRS and I would have to say even though we pay them monthly the gentleman on the phone was extremely helpful and cooperative.  I would have to rate him a 10 on customer service but over all I would rate the IRS a 1.

2. The current governor of Wisconsin is considering a run for President next time around. Walker attended Marquette University, but never graduated. In terms ofany candidate running for the office of President (not asking here if you agree or disagree with Scott Walker's politics) would the lack of a college degree influence your vote or no? Would that be a factor in your support of any candidate running for public office, even a role less weighty than President?
---- I honestly don't think that it would affect my vote at all.  I personally have 2 college degrees and cannot get a job in my field because I don't have experience.  I feel that experience is more important than any piece of paper that you pay 10’s of thousands to get just to put on your wall and be another piece of paper.
3. When did you last visit a place or site named for George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, and what was that place or site?

---- I went to Washington D.C. in 2006 with my ex.  We toured all of the monuments that we could get into and I absolutely loved it.  It is weird because when I was in high school I hated history but now that I am older I find that it is interesting.

4. February 16th was President's Day in the US, but did you know it was also National Almond Day? I didn't think so : ) Do you like almonds? If so, what's a food/dish/recipe you enjoy that contains almonds?

---- I did not know that it was National Almond Day which is interesting.  It was also my late daughters 26th birthday.  As for liking them only if they are in a Hershey bar.  That is the only way that I can eat them.

5.The television program Saturday Night Live celebrated it's 40th anniversary this past weekend. Were/are you a fan of the show? If so what has been your favorite (or one of your favorite) skits, sayings, or characters that came out of the program?
----I haven't watched this show in years.  I used to love watching it for the Rosanna Rosanna Danna skit.  I think that is the only part that I actually liked.
6. Anything purple within ten feet of you? What is it?
---- Yes actually, it is my All Day Organizer bag from ThirtyOne.  I love this bag and I take it with me almost daily.

7. Back in December I asked you to submit a question for a future HP as part of a giveaway I was hosting. I grabbed this one from those entries, submitted by Zoanna who blogs over at Penchant for Pens. Thanks Zoanna!

She asks, "How often do you make your bed, and how do you like to make it-pull the covers all the way up over the pillows, tuck the covers in around the pillows, or place all the pillows on top of the covers?"
---- I make my bed every morning.  I pull the covers up to my pillow and then throw my pillows on top of them.  I don't know why I do this but I make it a habit.  It makes me feel as if my room is more inviting with the bed made and there is just something about pulling down the covers and crawling under them when it is bed time.  It is so relaxing.
8. Insert your own random thought here.

---- Yesterday was my daughters Heavenly 26th Birthday and of all days it snowed about 10 inches here in Louisville.  I choose to look at it as her way of saying “don't be sad mommy, I am fine and you are too”.  The one thing that I love the most about winter is being able to see pure white fluffy snow which seems to make the world all new and mysterious and wonderful again.  I miss my daughter every single minute of every single day but yesterday wasn't a bad day after all.  Rather you believe in messages from the other side, angels, ghost, divine intervention or spirits is totally your choice.  I choose to believe in all of them because after all if I didn't then I couldn’t believe in GOD.  HE is after all the Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost and without him the world and my life wouldn't exist.  Even though I have had to deal with the unbelievable pain of losing a child I know that he has her up in Heaven and she is happy, healthy, forever you and with her Nana.

Thanks for stopping by and remember to leave your comments below for I always love meeting and hearing from new readers.  Would love to see your answers as well so again, link up to Joyce’s blog after you have copied the questions and answered them and join in on the fun.  Hope you have a great Wednesday and you are staying safe and warm if you are in this winter blast that we are dealing with here.

♥♥Happy Heavenly Birthday♥♥

I found this poem online and wanted to share it all with you since it was so fitting for her.  Today was going to be a hard day for me as it is every year but today we got SNOW!!!!!  I have always loved snow and I choose to believe that the snow is her way of telling me not to be sad on this day but to be happy and remember all the great things in life and the great times that we had together.

On this day 26 years ago I gave birth to an amazingly beautiful baby girl named Heather Nicole Jaggers.  Her Nana named her because the names I wanted was out of the question.  Then again mom always did know best.  Little did I know that this wonderful, beautiful child would grow up to be such a wonderful, caring, loving person who had two children that were just like her.  She was always the center of attention no matter where she was or what she was doing.  But if you knew her then you would have totally understood.  It isn’t because she was trying to be she just was without even trying.  She had a gentle soul and a mean streak a mile wide if you messed with her family.  She was a big sister, niece, granddaughter and cousin but most of all she was a friend and a great listener to everyone she came in contact with.  She loved being helpful and being involved with lots of activities in school.  Even though she was only 16 when she had her first kid she was still determined to finish high school.  When she graduated high school it was on her daughters 2nd birthday and she was pregnant with her second child and went on to go to college.

That is when things changed drastically in her life.  Long story short she got a job, started school and was killed in a motorcycle accident all in the same month.  It was the most horrible thing I have ever had to endure in my life.  Now her children are without a mother to watch them grow and see all of their first.  But I know she is smiling down on them and us from Heaven.  I know that one day we will be reunited with her in Heaven and things will be perfect.

My Weight Loss Journey

Hello everyone I hope you are enjoying your Sunday evening.  I know here in this house has been extremely laid back today.  Of course I was babysitting my most adorable grandson today while his mommy was working to make a better life for him.

Isn't he just adorable.  This was taking tonight after his mommy got home from a hard day at work.  She works at The Great American Cookie Company in one of the busiest malls in town.  She has worked so hard to make sure that they have a good life and he is supported.  She has only been with them for about 6 months and has already been promoted to an Assisted Manager position.  I am so proud of her and the woman and mother she is and has become.

So today is all about my weight loss journey.  I was never a heavy child or even puggy child when I was growing up and was still skinny into high school.  However, when I was 16 I got pregnant and gained 80 lbs.  I was able to get rid of almost all of it when I found out I was pregnant again with this one above.  I only gained the recommended 35 lbs with her but wasn't able to lose it again.  I guess that is what I get for having 2 kids 16 months apart.  But that is ok because I still finished high school, went to college and worked full time.  I did manage to lose some of the 35 lbs and got back to a comfortable weight.  But as time went on I started to gain weight and it never seemed to end.

I was 120 when I got pregnant the first time, lost it then pregnant again, kept most, got pregnant again, didn't lose much and then again another pregnancy and kept that weight.  I had stayed between 150-165 for many many years.  But then it just kept coming.  At one point I was up to 223 which was the heaviest I had ever weighed.  Now some of you may not think that is a big number but for me it was.  No one ever believed me when I told them how much I weighed because I was really good at hiding it.  However, it was not disguised as much as I had hoped from a lot of people because I kept getting asked when my baby was due.  I wasn't pregnant nor could I get pregnant anymore.  I felt as horrible as they did when they discovered I wasn't.

So lets fast-forward to this past November (25 yrs after my first daughter).  I don't know why but for some reason I stepped on the scale.  I was mortified.  The number on there just didn't seem real.  I mean I knew it had to be because my pants kept getting tighter and I kept buying bigger sizes.  The scale read 235!!!!!  WHAT? HOW? WHEN? WHY? IS IT BROKEN?  These are all things that went through my mind when I seen that number. Now again, to some it may not seem like a big number if you are heavier then that I am here to tell you that it doesn't happen overnight and it won't come off over night.  There are a lot of people out there that are fortunate enough to be skinny and that is great for them.  Trust me I was one of them for along time but then kids and life happened to me.

Yes I know that there are a lot of people out there that can have kids and be right back into their pre-pregnancy clothes.  My oldest daughter was one of them.  She delivered her daughter and was wearing her pre-pregnancy pants the same day.  It just didn't seem fair but I was happy for her.

So I have told myself this year like I do every year that I am going to lose weight, get healthy, change my wardrobe.  But lets be brutally honest here.  I didn't do a damn thing all the previous years so what was going to make this year any different?  The answer?  My attitude and the pain I was having, oh yeah and that number on the scale.

So for whatever reason in November when I seen that number I decided I was going to change things up in my eating habits.  I was going to switch from a big plate to a smaller plate, eat more salads and get fruits and veggies more in my diet.  Yes I know right before Thanksgiving and Christmas, I must have been out of my damn mind.  But I did it.

Here comes the end of December and I hadn't really noticed a difference in my weight or the way that my clothes were fitting so I decided to join the YMCA.  NO it wasn't for a New Year's Resolution either.  Those things are made to be broken.  I wanted to lose weight but do it the healthy way, no fad diets, no starvation or anything of the sort.  I knew that I had to start working out in order to burn more fat I would have to work out and turn it into lean muscle.

Needless to say up until January 21st of this year I had been a total of 3 times.  Yeah not alot I know.  I joined a Weight Loss Challenge class at the YMCA and the class started on January 22nd.  Here it is, time to face the music and be held accountable.  I went in the class and got on the scale and was shocked to see that I weighed in at 223.  OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!  I was already down 12 lbs since November.  (Just realized it was more than I had been saying all along)  I didn't know what to expect from this class but was disappointed to find out that it was a classroom structure only class.  I thought we would be learning the proper exercises to do, different ways to cook and so forth but nope not so far.  So every Thursday is weigh in day.

First Thursday - start day 223
Second Thursday - 222 (1 lbs down)
Tuesday the next week - 219.2 (had to go to this one because I was going to be out of town on that Thursday.  Explain in a minute  (2.8 lbs down)
This Thursday Past -  218.4 (0.8 down)

So as you can see not much weight loss so far but it is still a lose.  One that I am glad to have.  So let me explain how this works.  These charts is how this works.  Instead of counting Calories you are counting Fat Grams.  Yes Fat Grams.  I know it doesn't seem like a lot but it is trust me.

Basically you pick your weight, follow it over to our height and if you are active or non active and you get your fat gram count for the day.  So if I was more active than I could have 33 grams of fat but because I am not I only get 27 grams of fat.

Can I just say that this is way harder then I thought it would be.  I have tried counting calories but that didn't work really because I still ate all the wrong foods.  Now with this and the help of Myfitnesspal and my Fitbit I am doing a lot better.  It doesn't mean that I don't exceed my limit some days because I do but I know to watch it more than before.

So the first three of the weigh ins I did great, lost at least a pound or more but on the 4th I tanked it.  You see I went out of town for my nieces funeral and of course instead of packing my car with healthy snacks for the road trip I packed potato chips and chocolates.  I ate out and instead of making the healthiest of choices on food I ate what I wanted.  I had a steak damn it and I enjoyed every bit of it.  I didn't realize they were so high in fat content.  I liked to have cried when I seen that a Ribeye was 80 grams of fat.  That one piece of meat is almost 3 times the daily amount I am allowed to have.

So from here on out.  I am going to make Thursday post of my weight loss journey and to reflect on things I did right, things I did wrong and things that I have learned along the way.  I plan on losing 95 lbs by the end of the year and as long as I do it slow and steady I shouldn't have a problem.

Please feel free to share your thoughts, tips, tricks, ideas, support and disappointments with me for I know I am not the only one going through this journey.  There are so many of us out there that secretly deal with weight and weight loss issues.  It would be nice to know we have the support of each other.

I am sorry this post was so long but I will try to make them shorter in the future.  The first one is always the longest it seems.  So be watching for my Weigh In Thursday's for I will be baring it all just to show you are not alone if you think you are.

Hope everyone has a great night and stays safe if you are in the line of the winter storm coming through tonight.  We are expected to get at least 8-12 inches of snow tonight....woooohooooo.  I love the snow.

Talk to you all later and look forward to hearing from you all.

♥♥♥♥Wednesday Hodgepodge♥♥♥♥

Hello and welcome back to another edition of Wednesday Hodgepodge with Joyce over at From This Side of the Pond.  Today we are talking about the pretty color of Pink.  It is fitting considering this is the month of Love.  So please join us as we share our thoughts and answer another great edition of questions.  Be sure to link up to Joyce’s Blog after you have answered your questions and don’t forget to visit other bloggers and get to know some new people.  You never know who you might find you have a connection with.

1. Do you wear your heart on your sleeve, or keep your emotions tucked in tight?

---- I wear my heart on my sleeve for the most part.  When the time calls for it I can certainly tuck it away like no other.

2. How did you meet your closest friend?

---- My brother.  She is my sister-in-law Mrs. Kisha Jaggers over at

3.  Pink lemonade, grilled salmon, cotton candy, pink grapefruit, a strawberry milkshake, or raspberry sorbet...of the pink foods listed, which one is your favorite? Least favorite? Which one have you most recently consumed?

---- Pink lemonade.  There is nothing better to quench a thirst on a hot summer day.

---- Lease favorite is grilled salmon.  I don’t know why but I have tried it in restaurants, I have tried it baked and I have tried it when someone else cooked it and it just makes me hurl.

---- Honestly haven’t consumed any of these lately.

4. When were you last 'tickled pink' over something? Explain.

---- Weigh in at the YMCA yesterday.  I dropped another 2.2 lbs this week and I am so excited because I haven’t been under 220 in a long time.

5. Are you a fan of television talk shows? Daytime, nighttime, or both? What's your favorite?

----Not so much anymore.  I used to watch The View at work on my last job but anymore by the time I get home they are all over.  I don’t stay up late enough to watch any of the nighttime ones.

6. When was the last time you wanted to ask a question, but felt too foolish to do so?

---- I can’t think of a time that I didn’t ask a question.  I mean after all how do you learn if you don’t ask.  If I think it is a foolish question I will start it off with, “don’t think I’m dumb, I am just dead in the head at the moment” and usually I get a laugh.

7. My favorite __________________right now is _________________.

---- My favorite salad dressing right now is Balsamic Vinagerette  and the song Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

---- I got a call Saturday from my sister telling me that my niece passed away.  She was 31 yrs old, 31 days old and died on the 31st.  She has been trapped so long in her body due to Cerebral Palsy and now she is free.  My heart breaks for my sister, her husband and other children.  I know all to well what she is going through.
I didn’t know my niece very well for we live over 3 hrs apart and have been estranged most of my life.  I am however going to go to the funeral and I am leaving for the drive right after work on Thursday.  I promised her I would be there even though we aren’t close I still know her pain and want to be there to help comfort her in her time of need.

I know that she is a strong woman, I mean she has to be to have taken care of her daughter all her life even though her daughter couldn’t verbally communicate with her, couldn’t do the things that we all take for granted like walking, eating, playing catch or dressing ourselves.  I do know that she is free and perfect in Heaven and is at ease.  This doesn’t ease the pain by any stretch of the imagination but at least my sister knows that her daughter is in Heaven.

Thanks for stopping by and joining me on Wednesday Hodgepodge.  Don’t forget to leave a comment and visit many bloggers after you’re done.  We all love getting comments and meeting new people.
